We use your locks to make beautiful custom wigs and give them free of charge to kids and adults. We are only able to do this thanks to hair donations combined with financial contributions. When you join our ponytail tracking program, we show you the wig we made from your hair. Several organizations collect donated hair and arrange for it to be made into wigs for children or adults who lose their hair during cancer treatment or due to other illnesses.

The professional you contact must follow these steps for cutting and donating your hair or ponytail. If you must use a salon outside of our locations, please read our detailed instructions here. Most hair donation facilities will accept donations of all textures except for chemically treated or colored hair. There is also a requirement for hair to be at least 10 to 12 inches in length, making it long enough to construct a wig.
Where does the hair go once you’ve donated it?
We are still accepting hair donations during the Covid19 pandemic; however, some aspects of our wig production are delayed. So, before grabbing those scissors, take the time to read through your chosen charity's requirements and hair-cutting guidelines. Check the hair length and color specifications and read the step-by-step instructions for donating. Before cutting your hair, you’ll want to make sure that your ponytail is banded to prevent hair loss during shipping. Once your banded ponytail is in place, cut your hair above the rubber band, making sure to keep the acceptable length in mind. Overall, the process of donating is fairly straightforward. Let’s take a look at some of the most well-known and reputable places to send your donated hair. How Long Does Hair Have to Be to Donate?
With hair measured and guidelines checked (and double-checked), it’s time for your stylist to make the cut. Once that’s finished, make sure the cut hair remains nicely bundled. Some of these organizations commit to providing their hair recipients with a free, custom-fitted prosthesis every year or two until they reach the maximum age. To ensure the highest quality care for our recipients, we also provide customized care packages and training annually. Unfortunately, you will not be able to meet the recipient of your hair donation at Children With Hair Loss - we highly respect their privacy as they are minors. Children With Hair Loss requires a minimum of 8” for donations; anything below this length will not be used by the manufacturer during the production process.
